Brenda Wastasecoot has lived in Brandon longer than her home town of Churchill, where she was the sixteenth child born to Maria and Harold Wastasecoot.\u00a0 <\/span>She grew up down the flats just outside of Churchill, MB and was the only child in her family who did not attend Residential School.\u00a0 <\/span>She was first published in <\/span>Voice of the drum:\u00a0 <\/span>Indigenous education and culture <\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>(pp 121-138).\u00a0 <\/span>Culturally appropriate healing and Counselling: One woman’s path toward healing.\u00a0 <\/span>In R. Her children\u2019s book Granny\u2019s Giant Bannock <\/i>(Pemmican Publications, 2008)<\/span><\/p>\n

From a collection of unpublished poems she has written since her teenage years and has only read when invited by community organizations, she managed to give up her one story \u201cGranny\u2019s Giant Bannock\u201d with the encouragement of her daughter\u2019s Grade four teacher;\u00a0 <\/span>based on her childhood memories of herself and her mother.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Her PhD in the Adult Education & Community Development program\u00a0at OISE, University of\u00a0Toronto will explore family and community impacts of Residential School.\u00a0\u00a0Her\u00a0career in counselling began\u00a0with Aboriginal communities seeking culturally\u00a0inclusive healing\u00a0strategies.\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0focus of her research is rooted in and informed by her extensive experience in Aboriginal community and teaching background in the First Nations & Aboriginal Counselling\u00a0Degree program for nine years.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0
