Maitland Gibson<\/strong>&nbsp;(born December 4, 1943) is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadians\">Canadian<\/a>&nbsp;editor, publisher and writer.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Best known as the former president and publisher of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McClelland_and_Stewart\">McClelland and Stewart<\/a>, he was particularly noted for his professional relationships with many of Canada&#8217;s most prominent and famous writers.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-panofsky-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilmarnock\">Kilmarnock<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ayrshire\">Ayrshire<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scotland\">Scotland<\/a>&nbsp;and raised in the nearby village of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dunlop,_East_Ayrshire\">Dunlop<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Gibson attended the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_St._Andrews\">University of St. Andrews<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yale_University\">Yale University<\/a>&nbsp;before moving to Canada in 1967.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He worked briefly for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McMaster_University\">McMaster University<\/a>&nbsp;before being hired as a junior editor at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doubleday_Canada\">Doubleday Canada<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;where his first job was editing a biography of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Leacock\">Stephen Leacock<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1974 he became editorial director of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macmillan_of_Canada\">Macmillan of Canada<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;ascending to publisher of the company in 1979.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;During his time at Macmillan, Gibson sent first-time authors an instructional guide, &#8220;What Happens After My Book Is Published?&#8221;, which was published by&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saturday_Night_(magazine)\">Saturday Night<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;in 1979 and was nominated for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Magazine_Award_(Canada)\">National Magazine Award<\/a>&nbsp;for humor.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;With MacMillan, he was noted for successfully negotiating&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mavis_Gallant\">Mavis Gallant<\/a>&#8216;s first Canadian publishing deal;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-mysterious-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Gallant, a Canadian writer who had spent much of her life and career living in<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris\">Paris<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\">France<\/a>&nbsp;as an expatriate, was not considered to be well known in the Canadian market and did not even have a Canadian publisher at all until Gibson approached her. He also spearheaded the creation and publication of&nbsp;<em>Home Truths<\/em>, a compilation of Gallant&#8217;s Canadian-themed stories which was her only title ever to win the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Governor_General%27s_Award_for_English-language_fiction\">Governor General&#8217;s Award for English-language fiction<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robertson_Davies\">Robertson Davies<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruce_Hutchison\">Bruce Hutchison<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_Hodgins\">Jack Hodgins<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alice_Munro\">Alice Munro<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morley_Callaghan\">Morley Callaghan<\/a>&nbsp;were also among the writers who established relationships with Gibson in this era.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-perspectives-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 1980s, he also contributed film reviews to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CBC_Radio\">CBC Radio<\/a>&#8216;s&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sunday_Morning_(radio_program)\">Sunday Morning<\/a><\/em>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-panofsky-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Throughout his career, he has also been a contributor to&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Globe_and_Mail\">The Globe and Mail<\/a><\/em>, the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Post\">National Post<\/a><\/em>,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Books_in_Canada\">Books in Canada<\/a><\/em>,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto_Life\">Toronto Life<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maclean%27s\">Maclean&#8217;s<\/a><\/em>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-panofsky-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He moved to McClelland and Stewart in 1986,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-munro-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;becoming publisher of the company in 1988<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and president in 2000.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;With M&amp;S, he also managed his own imprint,&nbsp;<strong>Douglas Gibson Books<\/strong>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-panofsky-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Numerous authors, including Munro, Davies, Hodgins, Gallant,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hugh_MacLennan\">Hugh MacLennan<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guy_Vanderhaeghe\">Guy Vanderhaeghe<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/W.O._Mitchell\">W.O. Mitchell<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-panofsky-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;followed him from Macmillan to M&amp;S in order to continue working with him.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-perspectives-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Munro returned the advance the company had already paid her for&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Progress_of_Love\">The Progress of Love<\/a><\/em>, and had to enter several months of legal negotiations to get released from her contract,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-panofsky-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;although&nbsp;<em>The Progress of Love<\/em>&nbsp;ultimately became the first title published by Douglas Gibson Books.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-panofsky-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>The departures greatly damaged Macmillan, which published only a small and irregular selection of fiction titles after Gibson&#8217;s departure.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-panofsky-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gibson was awarded the Canadian Booksellers&#8217; Association President&#8217;s Award in 1991.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-perspectives-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following his retirement in 2008, Gibson published a memoir,&nbsp;<em>Stories About Storytellers: Publishing Alice Munro, Robertson Davies, Alistair MacLeod, Pierre Trudeau, and Others<\/em>, in 2011.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Gibson#cite_note-medley-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Munro wrote the book&#8217;s introduction.
